I have recently written about the process of integrating TCM within the Western medical system. As I stated, medical tests are at the very center of this integration becoming successful. I’ve discussed how important it is for a TCM practitioner to be able to interpret the results of simple blood tests or glucose readings. Many times, I have patients who bring me their charts, with many diagnostic tests results. Because I am proficient in assessing the results of these tests, I can validate my TCM diagnosis and, thus, treat the patient better.

Imaging studies is another area of Western diagnostic testing that needs the full attention of any TCM practitioner who has aspirations to function with their Biomed colleagues. I’m sure many of you are not quite sure of what Imaging studies includes. The simplest type of an imaging study is an X-Ray. A basic X-Ray gives the doctor a scan of the bone, where he can look for any fractures.

Medical technology has progressed to the point where a practitioner can evaluate not just bones but the underlying soft tissue. This enables him to gain a more thorough understanding of the extent to the injury or ailment. CT scans and MRIs are the most widely known imaging devices to give the make-up of the underlying tissue. A more recent development is the usage of nuclear screenings to scan the bone.

Obviously, Pain Management is a field where imaging testing has the biggest impact to a TCM practitioner. Western institutions, ranging from insurers to hospitals, are seeing the value of incorporating acupuncturists to their pain management staffs. I treat a lot of pain cases and I know how important it is to be able to discuss imaging studies results with my Western medical colleagues. The TCM practitioner gains instant credibility, with the Biomed professional, when he is able to discuss the results of these tests.

However, most importantly, the patient will receive the best treatment.
