Knee pain is an ailment I treat often. Many of my patients are on the older side and are suffering from pain in their joints; knee pain being a common occurrence. I have treated some knee cases that are truly different. However, one of the most unique ones concerns a person who had reconstructive surgery of his right knee.
The result of this surgery was that there was that his previous knee was replaced by artificial elements and a metal rod was inserted down his Tibia to his ankle. The reason he came to me was that his knee and leg were very stiff after he sat down or stood for a period of time.
When I did the initial examination of the area, I was surprised to see how stiff that area was. Again, I never treated a knee that was artificially replaced. His ROM and his ability to extend and flexed were severely compromised. I knew right away that I would have to be a little bit more expansive in my treatment plan.
Another kink in this treatment dealt with my using the Estim machine. I rely heavily on the Estim pulsations and TDP heat wavelengths to help with any pain or stiffness. However, using Estim is contraindicated when there are any artificial substances in the area such as metal. Right then, I knew that I would have to be a little more patient in my expectations regarding healing time.
I ended up treating the right leg Yang Ming channel with needling points on his left arm and elbow, using the Mirror Image technique. I mainly needled points along the left arm Yangming channel and points along the left arm Jueyin channel. In addition, I utilized the TDP lamp and Tiger Balm extensively on his right knee and leg.
I am pleased to report that after 6 sessions, the patient made remarkable improvement in both ROM and in stiffness/pain. I still see him monthly as a preventive measure.
