…I started treating Veterans in the Fall of 2019. Due to a switch in Insurance carriers, I have only recently started to again treat the “Vets”. I cannot begin to tell you how satisfying and gratifying it is to treat the ones who have helped preserve our personal freedom and liberties. I tell my friends all the time that we, Americans, take our freedoms for granted. I’ve traveled to most parts of the world and have seen how people function in a society where personal liberty is severely limited.
I have also learned a great deal in talking with the Veterans about their experiences. All of the Veterans I have treated owe their experience to the wars in the Middle East. The first thing that they express is how happy they were to serve out people and to help to fight for freedom for the ones who are oppressed in that region. Once they start opening up, they start to share some of their experiences in the actual war.
I can only tell you that I can see why they suffer from the PTSD and Chronic Pain that they do. I purposely highlighted these two disorders due to the fact these are the ones I treat most often as “primary” with the Veterans. These people have been involved in matters and have seen things that are just horrifying. The thing is that you can’t just erase these experiences from your existence. They are now part of you forever.
Is this fair? Absolutely not. However, it is how human existence operates. Other than treating them through the modalities of TCM, I always take time to discuss any lingering psychological thoughts or emotions that they are still having from their experiences. Predictably, some Veterans are very open and want to talk while others are most comfortable keeping those feelings to themselves.
However, I am always open about expressing my deep gratitude for their service and them leading the way in allowing me to still live a “free” life.
