I have treated hundreds of lower back/sciatic pain cases in my career as a TCM practitioner. As I have discussed before, I am trained to treat conditions, especially conditions relating to pain, by way of treating the Meridian. In the field of TCM, this method of diagnosing and treating is categorized as Meridian/Channel Theory. Lower back/sciatic pain cases are a perfect example to illustrate the true magnificence of Meridian Theory.
However, I want to focus this discussion on the powerful effects of two points, Ling Gu and Da Bai, in treating lower back/sciatic pain. What makes these points truly unique is that they are not located on an established Meridian. These are points that have their own classification and have thousands of years of research supporting their effects on lower back/sciatic pain.
Both these points are located along the index finger, Ling Gu is located in the on the superior portion of the lumbrical muscle of the index finger. Da Bai is located in the bottom portion of the Abductor Pollicis Transversus muscle. Obviously, they are located no where near the lower back. I cannot tell you how many times I have patients look at me in bewilderment that I am needling these points to treat their lower back/sciatic pain.
I am not going to give a big Western scientific explanation on why these Two points are so effective. I will in a future blog. I just ask you to appreciate that they both affect the Meridians flowing in the lower back region in a decisive manner. For any TCM practitioner reading this, I would hope you already appreciate what I just stated.
I must note that Ling Gu and Da Bai must be used together, at the same time, to render their positive effect on this condition. This is one of the most powerful point combinations that I have used in my practice.
