The Leg ShaoYang meridian is one of my favorite channels to treat because of the diversity of physical and emotional diseases that it can used to treat. I often focus on this channel, on its own, to treat disorders ranging from stress/anxiety to physical pain in distal areas. I also use the Leg ShaoYang meridian as an assessment tool. For instance, if a person has some physical disorder (usually pain) that does not directly involve the Leg ShaoYang channel, I will still use it as complimenting the main treatment protocol or to treat a symptom that is a result of the source of pain such as agitation.
I must point out that TCM practitioners are trained in different ways to help treat a patient. Some practitioners focus their practice on Herbs with acupuncture assuming a reinforcing role. I have been trained in Meridian theory and utilize the techniques in this branch of TCM to treat everything from pain to internal disorders. In future blogs, I will get into more detail regarding the exact mechanisms behind this field. At this point, it is enough for the reader to appreciate that Distal point needling or needling away from the source of agitation is utilized.
What I like most about this method of treatment is that it forces the practitioner to use other Meridians to treat the ailment. In my experience, this is much more nurturing to the body, as a whole, while still treating the problem. For example, I have treated lower back pain by needling right around the source of pain and have treated it by using this distal technique. Without a doubt, I can tell you I achieved better, faster results using the Meridian Theory technique.
Furthermore, I feel the positive results attained from treating by this manner yielded more substantiated and longer lasting results. I can say without any hesitation that it is my favorite way to treat any ailment.
